Day 17 May 18
Day 17 May 18
We were on the trail leaving Fromista at 8am arriving in Carroion de Los Condes at 1pm
Again blessed with perfect weather- clear skies and temps to mid 20’s
The days 19 km walk is set against the highway 100% of the way which has no shade and assured to be extremely noisy. Thankfully we are given an option for 2/3 of the walk to choose the river bank option which is a km longer but provides shade, earth and grass pathways and birds singing rather than diesels humming in our ears- a wise choice we made knowing the last 5 kms we have no choice other than parallel path to the main highway
We arrived in our final destination walking through a very busy town with lots of shops and cafes - crossing the exiting bridge to our hotel which is a converted monastery and what a beautiful place it is with its outside patio bar and luxury suites etc
No need to travel back into the town - self sufficient at this location
In the pictures for the day I have shown a group of cyclists - many choose to bike the Camino. For us walkers they can be a hazard as they seldom give any warning on their approach. Trails at times being narrow could lead to an accident
The second picture is two of our group of four crossing a footbridge over the river as we took the river path option. You can see the shade the trees provide verses the highway option.
Along the river route there were many flowering trees in full bloom
The next three pictures are of the Knights Templer church in Villalcazar dating back to the 12th century. The retablo depicts the life of St James.
As I waited for my party I sat and talked to this pilgrim but we had different languages so I moved on
The Meseta remains a very rich agricultural district as the picture denotes
Finally the bridge leading me to my hotel
Great day for a walk
Tomorrow we have a shorter walk of 17 km - one of our shorter days on the Camino
We are 17 for 17 - no rain
Till later
Buen Camino
