Day 6 May 7 Los Arcos

Day 6 May 7 - Each day getting better and better weather wise and our bodies toughening up as well. A 22km walk seems normal now starting around 8am incorporating several rest stops and arriving at our end destination by 2 pm.

Today we started out under clear blue skies and reached 20 deg by early morning. I walk daily in shorts and short sleeve shirt. Lots of sun tan lotion on and by end of walk one finds out where one missed in the application.

Paying attention to one’s foot care is the secret to having a good day on the Camino- thanks to my earlier learnings from my 2017 Camino. Already seeing pilgrims in some distress early on.

Highly agricultural region as we pass through several little towns. Everyone we meet are super friendly.

We are starting to build on relationships with other pilgrims as we meet and re-meet them over the days as each have their own pace.

We are 6 for 6 having clear / no rain days not to jinx our future.

Meeting folks from New Zealand, Australia, USA, Canada, UK, Spain, Italy, Germany, Korea, to name a few thus far and all are very gracious.

One thing our group of five ask our selves at the end of the day is “what is the one thing we learned today on the Camino?” Fir me today everyone is an equal- no matter if they are rich or not so rich, heart surgeon or labourer or regardless of their country of origin the Camino makes us all pilgrims. This will be our lives for the next 33 days at which time we will be placed back into our respective life’s realities. This will create some anxious moments for some as they near Santiago.

We are off for Logrono in the morning which will be our longest distance walk thus far at 28km. Six days in we have covered 122.8 km of the total 800 km or 15%. By end of day Sunday we will have one week in - hard to believe.

​ Day 30 May 31 As we left the mountain O’Cebriero this morning at 7:45am we were greeted with very heavy mountain fog - with the hints of sprinkles- so being the sort who does not want to get wet sported the rain gear  It was useful for the first half hour then the weather cleared and remained so for the rest of the trip today We have so lucky thus far with the weather  Passing through many little towns again on the leg made the walk quite enjoyable- although we did have the hill of all hills to climb - short lived and well groomed Stopped once for a short rest we soldiered on for the 22 km to Tricastle for the days end Last evening we went to the Pilgrims Mass at the historic church on O'Cebriero and it was full of pilgrims. Many take this as a starting point for their Camino and the tour bus pilgrims also start here. ​ First day on the 39 day Camino Weather report called for significant rain Lucky for us - no rain - just heavy fog / mist Kept the day reasonably cool Keeping in mind the first day was a 20km uphill 30 degree for much of the trek to an elevation of 1400 Left Saint Jean Pied de Port at 8am arrived at the highest pt at 4:30pm and to our destination at Roncesvalles 6pm. Without a doubt all 6 of us found the day more challenging than predicted Guide book says 8 hr and adds 6.5 km to the actual for hiking difficult It was the most challenging hike ever and the most challenging for the entire Camino so we are told First picture is a monument where Spain begins and France ends Second picture David and I at the peak 1400 m Third picture as we near our end destination (David) May 3 is to be 21km down hill and on the flats arriving at Zurbiri Should be a 4 hr trek Not sure about the rain yet I heard this evening of several walkers who had physical injuries due to the strenuous hill climb today ...

Day 34 June 4 Saturday Arzua

​ Day 34 June 4 Saturday Arzua Lots of rain last afternoon and evening and we woke to a very heavy land fog but no rain. On the trail by 7:15am for two reasons/ 1 - we have a 30+ km day to walk and 2- we heard the rain was to come in around 1 -2 pm and I am still a little afraid of melting. We walked right through with only two brief stops and no lunch on the trail and this achieved its end goal - arriving in Arzua before the rain. Rain did happen around 4 but we were well situated - no worries. Rained as well this evening with the expectation that we will be dry walking in the morning. If so that will be 1 rain day only in 35 days walking the Camino. That has to be some kind of a record. Easy walk today albeit one of our longer ones - which says volumes for the shape we are in at the end of the 800 km Camino. We had lots of kms in the wooded paths today many of which were the planted eucalyptus forests. They brought this species over from Australia for the paper industry as the eucaly...
