Day 26 May 27 Friday
Day 26 May 27 Friday
We were in for a long day today so we met for breakfast at 6:30am which meant wake up at 5:30am
On the road for 7 am
Cool start at 6 deg but nature rewarded us with above 30 deg by mid afternoon - thanks a bunch
The team was anxious to reach the Cruz de Fierro where we leave something of our life at the foot of the iron cross - which is now a wooden pole with an iron cross on top
They all felt a little less enchanted with the whole state of this well advertised key Camino attribute
I was here back in 2017 so nothing had changed for me
Someone comes and cleans it up I am sure
And it is situated right beside the main road
Oh well - on with our story
I left a piece of the Trinity North boundary wall slate
Trinity
Ssint John
New Brunswick
Canada
2022
With the Canadian and New Brunswick flags and one of my wooden crosses
You see me at the cross and another with me and the full height of the Iron Cross
The difference in five years almost to the day which I was here - 2017 it was a foggy and damp morning and today clear blue sky
Onward we went
A couple were biking the Camino - never saw one that was a recumbent and a standard all in one - his wife sat up front and he had the steering etc - she would have a great trust factor not to mention all the bugs etc
The scenery is just spectacular- sorry the camera just does not do it justice
Then we came upon this memorial
How sad - it was for Heinrich Krause - pilgrim - who was had a fatal bike accident 13 August 1987 This was outside the local cemetery
How sad
There are lots of risks walking or biking the Camino and I will get to some of these shortly that was part of our day
We reached the highest point this morning on the Camino and disappointed that this was not recognized in any way - 1515 meters
When one considers our first day was 1450 m
There have been lots of ups and downs over these past 26 days
We were well warned of the high risk of our decent today and the poor state of some of the path
Early on we came across lots - and I mean lots of blood on a huge rock - to learn shortly after that an Italian pilgrim slipped and hit his head
He was treated - taken out to the road and transported by ambulance
Then we saw a few others who fell to the unforgiving Camino - suffering various injuries
We adopted early on the tortoise approach
We arrived at Ponferrada at 4:30pm - 9 hrs walking taking out our lunch break
34 km today or 46,000 steps
We arrive - albeit tired
We have our second test day here tomorrow
So suffice to say
Sight seeing is left to Saturday
Sorry the pictures are a bit out of sequence - I am sure you can figure them out
Thanks for praying for happy feet and fair weather
26 for 26 no rain - remarkable weather thus far
Till then
Buen Camino
