​ End of Day 2 After the aggressive walk Day 1 climbing 1400 m today was a breeze We left Roncesvalles at 830am and arrived at Zubiri at 3:30 with a couple a rest stops 2nd day no rain Lots of horse herds but expect they are raised fir the meat like cattle Nice scenery pics Easy walk tomorrow which will be David’s last day with me Great to have had these days with him The team is doing well  Till later

​ Day 27 May 28 Saturday We are on our second of two rest days on this 39 day Camino We are at Ponferrada which is mainly known for the Knights Templer  We had a long day yesterday in high heat so we left the site- seeing to today  Rested well - met for the Templer Castle tour for 10am - which took 2 hrs There has been a tremendous amount of work done to make the tour safe with walkways / guard rails and such. Beautifully done in natural wood The Knights Templer were active in the 12th and 13th centuries with the mandate to provide and protect the pilgrims as they journeyed on to Santiago When one considered the most important shrines to visit they were 1) Santiago de Compostela, 2) Rome and 3) Jerusalem Travel was often dangerous - however it was a spiritual investment to visit the relics of a saint It was quoted “To have an impregnable castle in the Middle Ages was equivalent to the dissuasion of a modern day nuclear weapon” The Knights Templer came around 1178 taking over t...

​ First day on the 39 day Camino Weather report called for significant rain Lucky for us - no rain - just heavy fog / mist Kept the day reasonably cool Keeping in mind the first day was a 20km uphill 30 degree for much of the trek to an elevation of 1400 Left Saint Jean Pied de Port at 8am arrived at the highest pt at 4:30pm and to our destination at Roncesvalles 6pm. Without a doubt all 6 of us found the day more challenging than predicted Guide book says 8 hr and adds 6.5 km to the actual for hiking difficult It was the most challenging hike ever and the most challenging for the entire Camino so we are told First picture is a monument where Spain begins and France ends Second picture David and I at the peak 1400 m Third picture as we near our end destination (David) May 3 is to be 21km down hill and on the flats arriving at Zurbiri Should be a 4 hr trek Not sure about the rain yet I heard this evening of several walkers who had physical injuries due to the strenuous hill climb today ...
